That's a good question and a very tough one to answer briefly. Bottom line: it depends on the situation. I can see times when one would be better than the other. From a true friend, I would prefer honesty. From a more casual acquaintance, nice might be better, since I might not especially care about their honest reaction to things. Does that sound cruel?
Like I said, it's not a simple one to answer. I;d rather not have to make the choice and get and be both honest and nice.
