We all want equality in a world that is often unfair. But we, especially as Americans, feel strongly about our right to live freely and happily...even gay-ly. But it has never been an easy task to insure that we all have our freedoms and rights upheld. So we speak out and let it be known. Because if we can move people, we can move the world! And that's what the Gay movement for equality is doing. So, when we see movement come from our efforts, we need to celebrate it and to know that we all have a stake in making this world (and our country) a better place for all of us to live and love.
On November 15, 2008 hundreds of thousands of people -- gay and strait, black, red, yellow and white, christian and non-christian -- came together to make a statement about the passing of California's Proposition 8, which limited the definition of marriage in California law to only those unions between opposite-sex partners. Thus, nullifying the headway that Gays (and lovers of Gays) had made in having same-sex marriages deemed a constitutional right, just 6 months earlier. I stood up with/for all of those who believe that everyone has the right to live how we chose, and love who we do, without restrictions imposed on us because of our differences (Watch Video).
With U.S. District Judge in Massachusetts ruling the (Defense of Marriage Act of 1996) DOMA unconstitutional, in July coupled with the decision last week of the U.S. District Court in California to overturn Prop 8 as unconstitutional, things seem to be, once again, moving towards equality.
But this is not over, these rulings will almost certainly go on the U.S. Supreme Court for finally determination. Still, these are the battles that can win the war for equal rights. Just as it took many decades to get women the right to vote and to outlaw of racial discrimination, the fight for Gay rights is still in it's adolescence, but it is gratifying to see that the tides are beginning to turn. There is a change in mindset which is rippling across America and this trend towards true equality will ultimately impact all of us who have been oppressed or denied rights.
Thanks God for the Gays.

It's been 2 week since the decision and I'm still in shock. On December 2nd, 2009 The New York State Senate rejected a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. This is the same bill that had passed the State Assembly repeatedly and that Governor Paterson was ready to sign it into law. The State Senate voted it down: 38-24. 8 of those who voted against it were Democrats along with all the Republican NYS Senators.
So If I do my math right, if the Democrats had voted with the desires of the people they represent in mind (those that got them into office), by all rights, this bill should have passed. But government doesn't work that way. The idea that those in office represent the voters is an urban myth in our culture. And it hurts because good people have trusted it and have been gravely betrayed. It breaks my heart because this decision only continues the gay community's struggle for acceptance as fellow humans; a struggle, which at this point in history, should be history.
But, maybe I'm confused...I didn't think I lived in one of the Red States (no disrespect to Red's World). I thought New York was pretty hip to human rights and open minded to issues that may push the traditionalist limits. But I guess I was wrong. New York Senate, you should be ashamed of yourself for acting like a frightened child. We were counting on you to stand up and be a man about this issue and protect the rights of all your state residents...not just the straight ones.
As you should know by now, I have a great fondness for the Gay community. I feel for them because, like them, I live a lifestyle that is often misunderstood and judged by others. And as a result, I have had to endure scorn, unprovoked ridicule and rejection from people who consider themselves "good people". I've had people express concern about the kind of example I'm setting. I've had people have ask me to change or feel wary about associating with me. Others simply feel sorry for me, assuming that there is something wrong with me; that I'm abnormal or unhappy. And I've definitely been described as sinful. But even with all those who disagree with my way of life and my philosophy - even with all the discomfort I've had to endure for living in a way that is outside accepted social norms - no one has taken my rights away, or said that I cannot marry if I choose.
We all judge others based on our experience, beliefs or our fears, even I've done it - but I've never felt I had the right to tell others how to live. Discrimination of this kind makes no sense to me. What are people so afraid of? I mean really? Why do they feel that others need to be like them in order to be accepted and appreciated?
And why do they care who someone is attracted to? I may not be attracted to a certain type of person but I don't feel compelled to belittle someone who is. Why would anyone feel compelled to control who marries who? No one would tell a man and woman they couldn't marry, even if we can see that it's not the best pairing. So why do people feel that they have the right to make that decision for gays? Why is this such a charged issue? Who are we in this country that we feel that we have the right to disallow people that love one another from getting legally married? What kind of arrogance is driving this crusade?
Laws are made to protect people and their rights. We Americans pride ourselves in being able to live in a country where we are able to pursue happiness; where we are free to express who we are in a nation that is safe. Gays marrying doesn't harm anyone and it provides happiness to those who want to marry a member of the same sex. So why would is that right not afforded to 10% of our population?
The only thing I can figure out is that people are desperately afraid of those that are different. I know that's part of why I'm often disrespected and not accepted. We need to stop the fear and move forward. We need to act like we are human beings, and stop the judgement. We need to be what we claim we are: The home of the free.

Everyone has to admit that the Gays have a corner on cruising. I mean it's undeniable that they are the ultimate experts in this field.
Because I so admire their proficiency I decided to celebrate this in
several ways: First I model myself after a them, cruising whenever I can for
some male ass. It’s true... I live the stereotypical gay man and I’m proud of
it!
And to seal the deal, I went cruising with them last month on Sea Tea (New York’s Gay Sailing Party Cruise) and gayed it up.
I was one of the few women and I think I may have been the only straight one on the boat. But that didn’t stop me from checking out all the men with my boys!
It was boys night out... or girls night out. Anyway, we all had a gay old time!
William Adriance, a fellow blogger, who was more timely in getting his post up (if you know what I mean) regarding our night of debauchery was definitely the best entertainment there!!
So whether you’re a gay man or just want to be one, there is
much fun to be had cruising around the island.
It is Pure Fun!

I have a great affinity
to the Gay community and their struggles. I live outside the box and as
a result I have to deal with scoffs and judgments of those that think
my lifestyle is "wrong"...but at least as a heterosexual woman, I have
the right to marry.
The fall out from the Defense of Marriage Act, signed by Bill Clinton, in 1996 has had drastic consequences on equal rights in our country. It has been used as a way to legally discriminate against Gays for far too long, putting an important segment of our population in the position of fighting for the same fair treatment that most of us enjoy without a second thought.
The fall out of this bill is overwhelming, taking away not only the right to marry who you love, but all the benefits that are inherent to that union. Most heterosexual couple take for granted such benefits: Like health coverage for your spouse; the right to to be considered your spouses next of kin; the spousal testimonial privilege or spousal immunity; the right to have your foreign-born spouse sponsored for legal residency here in the United States.
The issue of inequality remains front and center, throughout the States. Ultimately, we have dispel unfair standards. They have been part or our culture for far too long. I often wonder, how we can call ourselves a free country when we deny people inherent freedoms? Especially when we know that to discriminate against one group, only creates more discrimination against others. The fignt goes on...
In Vermont, Vermont Freedom to Marry Action Committee is trying to address right of the Gays to marry, not just have civil unions. Married couples have more rights than those in a civil union. VT State Senator Campbell plans on to propose a gay marriage bill to the Vermont House this January. Add your voice.
In California, two judges of the federal appeals court, said that employees of their court were entitled to health benefits for their same-sex partners under the program that insures millions of federal workers. In response, the federal Office of Personnel Management, using the Defense of Marriage Act as justification, instructed insurers not to denial the benefits ordered by the judges. Now it goes to our President, The Courage Campaign gives you an oppotuity to voice in to President Obama on this.
However, some good news is that The Uniting American Families Act, was introduced last month the Senate by Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and in the House by Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.). It allows same sex couples the same rights that are now available to heterosexual couples --- the ability to sponsor foreign born partners for their green card.
And San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom, who has supported gay marriage openly since 2004 when he began allowing gay and lesbian couples in San Francisco to apply for marriage licenses despite the passage of a proposition in 2000 that prevented the state from recognizing same-sex marriages, continues to speak up for gay rignts.
The Gays and their supports are not sitting by, allowing others to continue to treat them unfairly. And I stand proudly with them.

So, it's nearing the end of this year. In fact, there are only a few hours left. It's that time of year that we stop and think about where we've been, where we're at now and what's to come.
As 2009 draws near, I thought we should take a moment to celebrate the accomplishments of 2008. In this past year, I Danced With the Oscar Stars, Ran for the President of the United States of America, and Marched with the Gays. But there were many other moments that I never had an opportunity to document or share that got me thinking about how different my life is today, than I ever imagined it would be.
I've been fortunate (beyond fortunate) and as I think about it, I'm not sure if it's because life handed me a multitude of opportunities, or if it's because I've always had my eyes wide open and I saw an opportunity in every experience. Perhaps it's both or perhaps it’s something that I’m completely unaware of. And perhaps doesn't matter why. I just know that I'm lucky. Lucky to have people that love me, lucky to not have worries that distract me from this moment and lucky to believe (because experience has proven it so) anything is possible.
So now, as I think of what the next year has for me, I’m at a complete loss. I have no idea what tomorrow or next month or next year will bring. And I’m glad of it! Because that leaves a world of infinite possibilities at my doorstep. Even when I don’t see them, they are there.
This year, this day, this moment, my hope is to keep my eyes open to the ever-present adventure of life and, of course, to have fun.
May this year bring you magic.
Happy New Year!
